In class—our penultimate Wednesday—we reviewed Bay&Valley day, and then transitioned to the concluding Saturday field trip focusing on ‘serious-stuff-coming-downhill.’ For navigation and geologizing on that tour, we’ll use 3 geopdfs
Here’s the geopdfs:
1: goldvalley bedrock A 2012 LiDAR-derived bare-earth with bedrock geology units, faults, and 10-meter contours. Also shows streams, roads, and contemporary hiking trails in yellow. Historical features such as prospects, surficial trams and subterranean adits are covered in this key.

2: goldvalley surfgeo Also on 2012 base-DEM, but zoomed in closer over just the portion we can walk to Saturday. I’ve tried to update landslide units to more closely match recent mapping from a variety of sources.
Download surfgeo geopdf here (14MB)
3: channel-centered surfgeo Big-picture views from Sayéik back to mainland slidepaths, Plus enough detail of Treadwell trails to stay oriented.

Possible retake: I kindof doubt we’ll have time to climb to the exact photopoint for this 123-year-old image. Might be too many view-blocking trees up there anyway. But from the beach maybe we can get an approximate retake. In case we get decent views, put the original on your phone. Download my journal page here (0.7MB)
Treadwell brochure Another handy resource for our walk above Sandy Beach is the two-pager I developed in conjunction with the trailhead signs project. If you’re interested in locations of the old mine buildings, roads, etc, there’s a detailed map of these, overlaid on modern airphoto. Not a geopdf, so open this one in Acrobat.
Remember also that you can download complete contents of all 10 3-panel trailhead sign clusters, as a pdf. Handy, when you get a mile or so down the trail and realize you insufficiently memorized a map or graphic 🙂
