Some of us are born loving rocks. The rest of us naturalists come in the back door, many decades later, as it slowly dawns on us how essential they are to understanding our world. Geology is the ‘abiotic foundation’ for everything we study and love. In his book Geology and plant life (2002, University of Washington Press), Art Kruckeberg paraphrases historian Will Durant, who wrote:
“Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice.”
Art changed that to “The plant world. . .” ( or substitute anything else you like—bottom fish, dragonflies, hoary marmots) . . . “all exist by geological consent.”
