Materials from the Eisenhower Math and Science series
In March, 1991, with Discovery director Cinda Stanek and naturalist Cathy Pohl, I gave a natural history workshop for teachers at what was then called Gastineau Elementary School, since renamed Sayéik, spirit helper, the Lingít word for Douglas Island.
This Discovery collaboration with Gastineau teachers kicked off a 30-year partnership with the school, where Cinda later became a teacher. Typically, our Nature Studies naturalists lead walks up behind Crow Hill, into the lovely complex of sphagnum bog and savannah-like forested wetland (09westjuneau.pdf (300KB) ). Sayéik is the district’s only island school, and as such has several notable differences, such as the greater role of deer in landscape ecology, and in our tracks&sign adventures.
Deliverables from the Eisenhower workshop for Sayéik resided for a time in a 3-ring binder, given to the school library. Today, they’re digital:
● Our workshop manual Nature near the schools: Glacier Valley & Floyd Dryden is a 17 MB
● A slideshow, originally in the form of 35mm slides (yes, kids, that’s what “slideshow” means!) is now available as a 12 MB powerpoint with presenter notes
