Discovery’s past and future
Discovery Southeast’s Winter 2013 newsletter includes my feature on the foundations of our organization. You’ll also find a profile of Steve Merli by Scott Burton, and short write-up by Scott about naturalist training at Auke bay.
2013 was the last ‘official’ newsletter under the Discoveries banner, and the first strictly digital production. I experimented with linked audio and one embedded video file.
We still send out paper and digital member updates, but the natural history feature articles, puzzler pages, Hocker sketchbooks etc, have fallen by the wayside. I had hoped to continue the tradition—and we still talk about reviving Discoveries—but other projects (like this website!) have taken much of the energy that fed the newsletter. Also, much of the administrative incentive has faded with the transition from paper news to social media.
