Socratic method in field and print

Feature article on using the Socratic method in outdoor education. Title comes from our goal in field outings; chum the waters with questions in hopes the class will transition to generating their own. Using this method is less common in print. My article was inspired by the writing of Tom Wessels at Antioch, who challenges readers to answer puzzlers in his natural history of the eastern deciduous forest.

Also has sketches from Kathy Hocker’s field notebook, and a book review of Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods.
