Blood moon
At the beginning of my near-daily goatwatching stint in 2020, I bought a Nikon P1000 that zooms to 3,000 mm. Probably 98% of my use has been for filming Jánwu, usually at distances of a quarter mile or so. But one of the selling points of this camera is that it nearly frame-fills the moon, and probably everyone who buys one tries that.
At 3,000mm, the moon passes through my field of view in about a minute. This 40-second slide show begins with video, then a series of stills condensing several hours of earth-shadow passage.
Moon shots aren’t the only ‘ incidentals’ from this ultrazoom. Over the past 5 years, while waiting for Oreamnos to show up, I’ve stumbled across some pretty cool bird activity. Stay tuned for a BBB post (Best bycatch birds).
