Twenty million years on Xutsnoowú, bear fortress (Admiralty Island). Back to the days before glaciers turned it into an island, and Arcto-tertiary flora covered Alaska with temperate deciduous flora similar to the Smoky Mountains of today. I concluded with an imagined “future” scenario from the inconceivably far-off year of 2025, by which time red squirrel would have completely overrun the island. Somehow that doesn’t seem so futuristic in 2018. And yes, the squirrels have prevailed, to the sorrow of grouse.
