Overlays as ‘pageflippers’
This was the only Environaid publication for which I was sole author. To prepare for field work, on Yakwyaax̱, alongside boat
(Big Boulder Creek) Dan Bishop requested a series from air photos he’d collected, all in the same scale and alignment. This gave us a better understanding of changes on the famous king salmon spawning reach transected by Haines Highway.
Digital presentation has since made this type of series much easier to use. In recent years I’ve settled on ‘pageflippers’ as the best way to compare maps and photos showing change over time. Placed on adjacent pages of a pdf, you can toggle back and forth with the arrow keys or mouse roller, holding your cursor over a specific point-of-interest. In the original document for Dan, I only copied tracings of the channel and vegetation.
For this version, I’ve added stereopairs from his flightlines, allowing 3D examination. I frequently referred to these when tracing the pen&inck map series to identify species, gauge canopy height, etc.
