A first visit with LCC
In July, 2019, Jessica Plachta, director of Lynn Canal Conservation, offered to host my family for a few days in Chilkat country. Not only Cathy Pohl and me, but my sister Tina Carstensen and her friend Norma)—both of them early childhood principals from Guadalajara. The trip served 3 purposes: 1) field reconnaissance in the Greater Chilkat Watershed, guided by Jessica and her naturalist husband Nick; 2) project scoping meeting with leaders of LCC; 3) search for trumpeter swans—sister Tina’s spirit animals. Thanks, Jessica! for letting us mix business and vacation. (and for finding Tina her swans!)

Sample page from my 61-page journal for our whirlwind visit to the Greater Chilkat. Two families—Jessica’s and mine—carpooled across the border into alpine tundra, exploring streams like Stonehouse Creek that form the headwaters of this nearly 2,000-square mile watershed.
