Notes from explorations with Streveler

This was back in the pre-drone dark ages, so Greg and I climbed the communications tower above Angoon for a panorama.

Strev’s annotation, backside of this 3×5 print; “you are the ugly one on the right.”
Discovery’s ‘on-the-road’ teacher training series occupied all of February, March and April of 1993. This was a continuation of the workshop series that Greg Streveler and I started in Haines in October, 1992. In February, I made a short scouting trip by ferry to Angoon. I stayed at KJ and Peggy Metcalf’s place, who were out of town but left me the use of their home. Otherwise, I used February to prepare maps, stereograms, slide shows and other resources for the 4 communities where we were offering workshops.
On February 28th, Greg and I ferried to Hoonah. We had scheduled 4 weekend workshops at two-week intervals in Hoonah, Angoon, Sitka and Petersburg. This was a very intense 2 months, living with Greg in the 6×9-foot Naturemobile. In each town we parked in a teacher’s driveway and ran an extension cord out to the camper. We interviewed knowledgeable locals, checked in with the Forest Service and Fish & Game, and explored the surroundings of the public schools. As in Juneau, we were particularly interested in field trip sites that teachers could quickly walk to from school with their classes.
Workshop dates: (teachers also came from towns listed in parentheses)
● Hoonah – 19930305-7 (Gustavus, Elfin, Pelican)
● Angoon – 19930319-21 (Tenakee)
● Sitka – 19930402-4
● Petersburg – 19930416-17 (Wrangell)

Photo by Greg Streveler ● Title: Elegance Boy do I love this Naturemobile. You can hear the birds from it, even with the heater going. You can scrunch down and hide from passersby, yet still have 360 degree light from windows on all 4 sides. The RV life is the life for me! Greg says I need one of those camper-sized drop-kick poodles . . .
Hmmmmm, we probably need one more captioned illustration, to give the flavor of this expedition . . .
